2. Coding Strategy

In order to key in the data collected into IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social 
sciences), a coding strategy is needed. Based on the data, the variable and value has been record as shown below:




The variables coded are:
  • Gender: 0 = Male, 1 = Female
  • Ethnicity: 0 = Malay, 1 = Chinese, 2 = Indian, 3 = Others 
  • Education: 0 = Secondary school, 1 = Diploma, 2 = Degree, 3 = Postgraduate, 4 = Others
  • How many hours on average you spent DAILY on using the internet?

0 = Not at all/not daily
1 = Less than 1 hour
2 = 2 - 3 hours
3 = 4 - 5 hours
4 = More than 6 hours

  • How many hours on average do you use the Internet in A WEEK?

0 = Not at all
1 = 1 - 13 hours
2 = 14 - 41 hours
3 = More than 42 hours


For the most used social networking sites (SNSs), we use multiple response thus every social media will be stated as a variable in the SPSS.


As for the two scales above, the given short names are decided to represents it in the SPSS.

- The Compulsive Internet Use Scale as 'CIUS' 
   Individual item: "CIUS01" to "CIUS14" (14 items) 
   Total score of CIUS: CIUS_total
  

- Online Privacy Literacy Scale as 'OPLIS'
   For the Online Privacy Literacy Scale, there are two sub-scale which are:
  
   i)  Institutional practices = "PRA01" to "PRA05" (5 items)
   ii) Data protection strategies  = "STR06" to "STRS10" (5 items)
   Total score of OPLIS: OPLIS_total
